CLINICIAN GUIDE · CARDIAC TESTING EXPLAINED · SECTION 3 OF 3

Interpreting results & next steps

Recognize meaningful findings, limitations, and referral needs.

Read the report in context

  • Check study quality and whether the intended question was answered.
  • Compare with prior findings and symptom changes.
  • Assess severity, the complete interpretation, and recommended next steps.
  • An abnormal value may need confirmation; a nondiagnostic study does not establish normality.

Link findings to an action

New reduced EF or important valve abnormality

Cardiology evaluation; urgent disposition if decompensated

High-risk ischemia or significant coronary anatomy

Prompt cardiology assessment; acute symptoms require emergency care

VT, advanced AV block, or symptomatic major pauses

Urgent rhythm assessment; avoid a routine follow-up queue

Symptoms occurred with no monitor recording

Reconsider duration/technology and the differential diagnosis

Reassuring study but persistent concerning symptoms

Reassess clinical probability; coordinate the next step

Prepare patients and close the loop

Give the testing center’s instructions for medications, caffeine, fasting, diabetes therapy, and transport where sedation is used. Avoid generic instructions that conflict with the chosen protocol.

Assign responsibility for result review and communication. Explain what was found, what remains uncertain, and the follow-up plan. Refer when selection is complex, results are discordant, or a significant abnormality requires treatment.
