PATIENT EDUCATION · THE SIMPLE EXPLANATION

Dizziness and lightheadedness, made clear.

A few pictures. Short explanations. Start here, then explore the full guide when you’re ready.

01 · DIZZINESS AND LIGHTHEADEDNESS

What do you mean by “dizzy”?

Sinus node dysfunction: The heart’s natural pacemaker starts signals too slowly or pauses.
Heart block: Electrical signals from the upper chambers are delayed or blocked on their way to the lower chambers.

Lightheadedness feels like you may faint. Vertigo feels like spinning. Imbalance means feeling unsteady. Describing the sensation helps your clinician find the cause.

Slow heart rhythms are one possible cause, not the explanation for every dizzy spell.

02 · DIZZINESS AND LIGHTHEADEDNESS

Could blood pressure or rhythm be involved?

Symptoms may occur after standing, during an abnormal heartbeat, or after a medication change. A monitor can look for a rhythm change during an episode.

Record what you were doing and how long the episode lasted.

03 · DIZZINESS AND LIGHTHEADEDNESS

What should I do during a spell?

Sit or lie down safely. Avoid driving, climbing, or walking unsupported while you feel unsafe. Ask your care team about recurrent or unexplained episodes.

Do not change heart medicines or start extra salt or fluids without checking your care plan.
