PATIENT EDUCATION · THE SIMPLE EXPLANATION

Supplements and your heart, made clear.

A few pictures. Short explanations. Start here, then explore the full guide when you’re ready.

01 · SUPPLEMENTS AND YOUR HEART

Does “heart health” on the label mean it works?

No. A supplement may help a specific nutritional need, but a marketing claim is not proof that it prevents a heart attack, stroke, or rhythm problem. FDA does not approve supplements for safety and effectiveness before sale.

“Natural” does not guarantee safety.

02 · SUPPLEMENTS AND YOUR HEART

Could it interact with my medicines?

Supplements can change how medicines work. Potassium can rise dangerously with certain heart medicines or kidney disease. Red yeast rice may contain a statin-like ingredient. Fish oil products are not all equivalent.

Bring the exact bottle or label, including the dose and all ingredients.

03 · SUPPLEMENTS AND YOUR HEART

What is the safest next step?

Start with the benefit you want, the evidence for that product, and your own medical conditions. Food is often the best starting point. Use supplements for a clear purpose agreed with your care team.

Do not replace prescribed heart medicines with a supplement.
