PATIENT EDUCATION · THE SIMPLE EXPLANATION

High blood pressure (hypertension), made clear.

A few pictures. Short explanations. Start here, then explore the full guide when you’re ready.

01 · HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)

What do the two numbers mean?

Blood pressure is the force of blood against artery walls. The top number measures pressure when the heart squeezes. The bottom number measures pressure between beats.

High blood pressure often causes no symptoms.

02 · HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)

How do I check it at home?

Use a validated upper-arm monitor with the correct cuff size. Rest quietly for five minutes. Sit with your back supported, feet flat, and arm supported at heart level. Take two readings one minute apart.

Record the readings; one high number does not usually establish the diagnosis.

03 · HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)

What helps bring it down?

Less salt, regular activity, healthy weight, and prescribed medicines can lower pressure. Your care team chooses a goal and treatment based on your health.

Keep taking treatment even when you feel well. Bring your home readings to visits.

If the top number is above 180 or the bottom number above 120 without concerning symptoms, repeat after at least one minute. If still this high, contact your clinician immediately. Do not take extra medicine without instructions.
